Case history .. twin MANN 2840 840hp TDs
$30,000 SAVING on engine revival.
A modern charter boat with twin MANN 2840 840hp TD engines showed signs of rough running, lack of power and lots of exhaust black smoke.
A compression test was done on 2 cylinders, one per engine, which showed only 300 and 305 psi.
Considering the above visual and measured symptoms, carbon deposits were suspected of causing cylinder glaze and/or piston rings to stick.
Rather than strip both engines to remove the suspected fouling, FTC catalytic decarboniser was added to the diesel fuel as directed on the product label.
After about 20 hours further running on FTC, the roughness and smoke problems were gone .. engine power was restored. Subsequent compression tests showed 375-380 psi. Work done by Jeff Ellis marine diesel engineer Auckland.

The owner of a 53ft boat was faced with a $40,000 cost to rebuild his twin 8V53 Detroit Diesel engines.
